so what is cupping?

This is my most frequently asked question. Here's the short answer. Cupping is a lot of things, but simply put: Cupping is a vacuum therapy that increases circulation in the body which is beneficial for tight muscles to receive fresh oxygen. For the long answer, read on :)

The intention of cupping therapy is to release stagnation and create room in the joints and tissues for new blood and nutrients. Tight muscles restrict healthy lymphatic flow, causing a build up of stagnant blood and metabolic waste. (Also caused by things like injuries, diseases, surgery, emotional pains, medicines, toxins, poor diet, stress, age and over-use.)

These stagnations effect our bodies natural waste removal system, resulting in pain and discomfort. Cupping therapy uses a vacuum effect to bring stagnant blood to the superficial layer of tissue where they are carried out by our circulatory systems, metabolized and excreted naturally. Cupping creates space in the once stagnated tissues for new blood, oxygen and nutrients necessary for healing. The suction effect of cupping also stretches and loosens muscles and surrounding connective tissues.

Once the cups are placed and suction is applied, there is a pulling sensation on the skin and muscle layers. The cups are left on for 5-10 minutes, depending on the individual's tissue reaction to the treatment.

The cupping marks will last anywhere from a few hours to a week or two. Duration of these circular cupping marks depend on the severity of the stagnation and toxicity of the tissues.

How to prepare for your cupping session...

  • Eat a light meal prior to your session - cupping on an empty stomach may cause dizziness

  • Check your social calendar - prepare for marks to last up to 3 weeks

Aftercare...

  • Keep the treated area covered and protected from extreme heat or cold - a warm shower or bath is acceptable

  • Drink plenty of water to aid the body in flushing out the toxins

  • Avoid alcohol and toxic substances - these will overload your liver that is already working over time to process what has been reintroduced into your system

  • Relax - healing happens when we create space and time to recoup, relax and regenerate
